The qualifying period for protection against unfair dismissal is one year.

The minimum wage from 1st October 2011 is £6.08 an hour for workers aged 21 and over.  For 18 to 20 year olds it is £4.98 an hour. The rate for 16 to 17 year olds (over school leaving age) is £3.68 per hour. The apprentice rate is £2.60 an hour.

Employers must be able to prove staff are allowed to work in the UK.

Working Time

Minimum entitlement to paid holiday has increased from 20 to 28 days per annum.

These change have taken effect in two stages: rising to 24 days entitlement from 1 October 2007 and to 28 days from 1 April 2009.
